Frequently asked questions

Who qualifies?

As a registered charity the Trustees of the Fund have to abide by the terms of its Constitution, approved by the Charity Commission, which states that to qualify for our almshouses “The residents shall be poor aged or infirm persons who are inhabitants of the area of benefit” i.e. Kendal or the villages in the immediate vicinity.

We do not have a specific age limit for those applying for our properties but generally give priority to those who are of retirement age.

The aim of the Trustees is, whenever possible, to provide housing for people from Kendal currently living in social housing properties which are now too large for their needs, thereby allowing the release of these properties to local housing associations to house families on the waiting list. The occupants must live independently, however the Trustees do visit them on a regular basis to check on their wellbeing and actively encourage a community spirit.
